North America: A World of Travel

Author: Frank Johnson

Source: articleage.com

Spanning over 25 countries, islands and territories from the Arctic Circle to the Tropics, no other continental region is as uniquely diverse as North America. There are as many snowy retreats as there are beachside utopias; an abundance of modern metropolitan centers as well as a multitude of inspiring historic sites. Canada, Mexico and the United States comprise the majority of North America, but the smaller nations of Central America and the Caribbean are also considered part of the enormous continent.

Wilderness to Go Wild For

Many of the world's most spectacular National Parks and protected wilderness areas are scattered about North America, as it was one of the last regions to be colonized by Europeans. Death Valley National Park, located in California's Mojave and Colorado Deserts, is the hottest, driest and lowest (282 feet below sea level) place in North America, with summer temperatures averaging over 100 degrees Fahrenheit and annual rainfall under 2 inches. The best time to visit is mid-Spring when the weather is mild and the wildflowers are blooming. The soaring geysers and vibrant blue-green geothermal pools of Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, make it the ultimate destination for the nature lover. Herds of the once endangered North American Bison graze the rolling grasslands and the mythic Grizzly Bear forages through pristine mountain forests. Travel North America's expansive protected lands and discover why this region is synonymous with the modern definition of wilderness.

Sandy Beaches, Cascading Peaks

Baja California is one of Mexico's most beautiful resort destinations. The peninsula divides the tranquil waters of the Sea of Cortes to the East and the deep Pacific Ocean to the West. Baja's subtropical tip is dotted with the popular vacation spots of La Paz and Cabo San Lucas. To the East, the Gulf of Mexico draws northerners and foreigners to the tantalizing white sand beaches and turquoise waters of Cancun, the Bahamas and southern Florida. North America also boasts an incredible collection of winter ski and snow resorts. For the thrill-seeker in you, the two top-ranked destinations are the ferocious pinnacles of Whistler, Canada and the intimidating jagged crest of the Grand Tetons in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

Enticing International Cities

Travel North American cities for an intensely multicultural atmosphere, which blossomed from the tumultuous history of the region. The diverse ethnic makeup of cities like Montreal, New York, Chicago and Los Angeles has created profoundly rich art and music cultures as well as unparalleled international cuisine. Other cities like Mazatlan, Mexico and Washington D.C. tell a more intimate history of their specific regions through extensive museums, archeological sites and monuments.

North America is a bastion of fascinating cultural heritages, historic dramas and pristine wilderness. Nearly 40 million people inhabited the continent by the time Europeans arrived and there is evidence to suggest humans have been present for over 15,000 years and potentially as far back as 50,000 years. The blending and clashing of indigenous populations with sea-farers, explorers, slaves and religious refugees from the Old World has created the dynamic and wondrous landscape of modern North America

Canadian Rockies Holiday - Things to Remember

Author: Tom Ockelton

Source: ezinearticles.com

You have your summer holiday booked to the magnificent Canadian Rockies - now what? There are a number of things to remember when visiting the Canadian Rockies in the summer time. I have provided 15 tips below:

1) Passport: If you are travelling from outside of Canada, even from the U.S., you now require a passport to enter Canada. You don't need to pre-arrange your visitor visa from some countries. For more information on which countries require you to have a Visa, visit Canada Immigration and Citizenship

2) Airport hand luggage: Make sure you don't pack any sharp objects in your hand luggage if you are travelling to Canada by air. Most airport websites have information on what you should pack.

3) Sunscreen: You will be at higher elevations in the Rocky Mountains which means you will be closer to the sun and it's harmful rays. Lake Louise is at 1,536 m (5,039 feet), it is the highest permanent settlement in Canada (Banff is the highest town) so make sure you slip, slop, slap! (Slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen and slap on a hat!).

Remember areas like the tops of your ears and the underside of you chin and nose if you plan to go onto Athabasca glacier.

4) Moisturiser: The air in the Canadian Rocky Mountains is very dry and you will notice this straight away. Avoid dry ski irritations by using moisturiser in the mornings and evenings. There is now a range of moisturisers such as product lines just for men. Don't pack these in your carry on luggage as they may be taken of you (see point 2)

5) Clothing: Make sure you bring out a good breathable waterproof just in case. Alberta is the sunniest province in Canada, but west coast locations are much wetter.

Bring out a breathable fleece too - we have been known to have sleet and snow on the mountain tops in August. This is rare but does happen. Mountain weather can change suddenly so be prepared and the weather is usually cooler on the mountain tops.

Swim gear is recommended too as some hotels have pools and there are hot springs to soak in!

6) Water: A light weight water bottle is a must as you need to get in the habit of continually sipping from a water bottle. The higher altitude means you will become dehydrated sooner and if you don't drink plenty of water, you may find you develop signs of dehydration such as a head ache. Avoid excessive alcohol and products with caffeine in them as these can cause a 'diuretic' (water loss) effect speeding up dehydration. Bringing out a bottle and refilling it each time is a much more friendly to the environment than purchasing plactic bottles as these inevitable end up in landfills. You can drink the tap water here and most water sources come from glaciers so it tastes great too.

7) Footwear: If you intend to hike, make sure you have some sturdy boots as the trails can be very rocky. If you don't intend to hike, there are plenty of walking trails which don't require boots and suitable footwear such as trainers would suffice. High heels are only suitable in the cities so leave those at home!

8) Backpack: Bring out a backpack with a breathable mesh as it is more comfortable in warmer temperatures when hiking.

9) Knowledge: One of the main attractions in the Canadian Rockies is the wildlife. A the name indicates, these animals are "wild" so give them plenty of room. An animal as small as an innocent ground squirrel can give you a nasty bite. In the National and Provincial parks there are large fines if you feed the wildlife as you can do the animal more harm than good.

Know what to do if you have a bear encounter and be prepared for a much rarer cougar (or mountain lion) encounter. These can happen quite close to most Rocky Mountain townsites. Visit the Parks Canada guide to safety and conservation and contact the local information office before you head out into the back country for bear sightings. If there is a bear in an area, avoid that area.During the summer months in the Canadian Rockies, the bears love to feast on the buffalo berry bush. The berries are bright red (but can also be bright orange). Know what these plants look like and if you are in an area with a lot of these bushes, make plenty of noise or turn around.

10) Preparation: Be prepared for everything. Health care is expensive here if you don't have travel insurance with medical coverage. If you injury yourself in the back country, you may need to helicopter to fly out so insurance a must.

11) Camera: Have plenty of memory if you bring out your digital camera and remember your charger.

12) Phone: If you are bringing in your mobile phone from outside of Canada, be sure to contact your telecommunications provider and ask to have the "international roaming" function turned on. Check the rates before your leave as using your phone in Canada can be costly.

13) Travel adapter: If you intend to bring out any electronic equipment remember to bring out a travel adapter. Purchase this in your country of origin as buying one in Canada may be hard to find to fit your plug.

14) Credit card: Credit cards are accepted everywhere and usually there are no minimums. Make sure you contact your credit card provider before you leave so they don't treat Canadian transactions as suspicious and block your card. Remember your pin to your credit card so you can withdraw money although you will be charged for a cash advance. Ask your bank if you can use your card to withdraw money overseas - this is usually the most economical way to pull out Canadian funds. Travellers cheques are not so common here - cash is king!

15) Itinerary: If you have had your holiday put together by a tour operator, keep your itinerary in your carry-on luggage and keep the company's toll-free or freephone number in your wallet in case you need to call. This also provides peace of mind and support if you need it.

Rocky Mountain Holidays offer information on locations in the Canadian Rockies including weather statistics.

Tips For Traveling In Israel By Trains

Author: Michal Moreno

Source: articledashboard.com

The Israeli railroads infrastructure has been upgraded significantly in the past 10 years. While until 1996 most of trains & railroads were bizarre collections of British "leftovers" from the mandatory occupation that lasted until 1948, nowadays Israeli trains can take you almost anywhere in Israel and (almost) right on time.

Most of the train stations have been rebuilt, and the train cars themselves are made by top-of-the-line European train-car manufacturers. The ride itself is usually very smooth and comfortable and most on the trains do make it right on time (which is very rare, generally speaking in the middle east and Israel).

While prices and service are only fair, there are some important tips to remember when traveling Israel by train: some are trivial for every train rider while some are unique to Israel.

• Try to avoid taking the train on Sunday - while most of the Israeli soldiers are using the trains as their preferred (and free) means of transportation, and are using them to return from their vacations you will find it literally impossible to find a free seat on the Sunday trains. Some of them are so packed that they do remind of third world country trains (by the way - in some aspects Israel is a third world country..) . Whatever you do try not to use Israeli trains on Sunday and if so - do it after rush hours and not before 15:00.

• Bring your own food & drink - While there are no restaurant train cars on any of the lines, there are attendees who carry small trolleys with hot drinks, soft drinks, sandwiches and snacks. The only problem is that prices are extremely high, you might find yourself paying way too much for food and drink which you can buy at the train station for literally half the price.

• Hotspot wireless internet - is available only in the main stations in Tel-Aviv, and the service is highly priced (by the hour or per day). If you want to catch up with your email - download them before boarding to the train, there is no wireless connection on the trains themselves.

• Double deck trains - some of the trains have tow levels, it is very easy to recognize them - they are all painted in red. If you see one of these (they are fairly popular on the busy Tel-Aviv - Haifa lines) - try to get to the penthouse ? the view is much better and there is much more sunlight.

• Don't miss the ride to Jerusalem by train! - it is slow, not efficient, has very low frequency, and the central train station in Jerusalem is next to "Malcha Mall" in the far end of the city, but after saying that: this is the most interesting train line in Israel which was re-opened only last year (2005). If you want to see Israel diverse landscape - don't miss this ride.

To sum things up - Israel train is lots of fun, especially if you are a tourist and not in a hurry to anywhere, you will find this means of transportation as comfortable and efficient. Don't hesitate to use it whenever you can, especially if you are on a budget.

Budget Honeymoon Travel - How to Consummate the Best Deals

Author: Sam Serio

Source: ezinearticles.com

Anyone that has ever paid for a wedding will fully realize just how expensive it is. Many individuals save up for years for their wedding and yet find that they only have just enough for their dream day. The honeymoon is an extra that many people forget and then realize that they do not have enough money to pay for the trip of their dreams, but with budget honeymoon travel the trip of dreams is still very much available and accessible!

Budget honeymoon travel is all about knowing where to look and timing your booking just right in order to get the lowest rates possible. This applies to the destination of your choosing the majority of the time because it is possible to find substantial discounts all around the world! You can actually save anything from 20% to 50% and get a range of free extras with budget honeymoon travel, including access to amenities that you would have otherwise have paid for, health treatments, additional nights, entertainment and meals. With all this at you fingertips for an amazingly affordable rate, why would you not want to take advantage of them?

If your idea of a great honeymoon is living in the lap of luxury for a few weeks then these budget honeymoon travel tips will enable you to do that:

1. Look at short stay vacations in locations that are considered to be off-season at the time of your wedding. For example, if you are getting married in the US summer, look to go to the Southern hemisphere for your honeymoon. If it is a winter wedding, look to the Northern hemisphere. You will find plenty of budget honeymoon travel packages that cost a fraction of the price if you are going off-season!

2. Look at the lower room rates rather than the suite rates. By choosing a basic room, you can save up to half of the cost. Budget honeymoon travel should be about the newlyweds and the place you are visiting and not what you have in the room!

3. If you mention to the hotel in question that you are on honeymoon and have a tight budget then they will often offer a discount on top of the room rate or throw in an extra night. If you want to access budget honeymoon travel then you have to be cheeky but many agents will not do this for you because they will lose commission, so it is best to contact the hotel itself and ask.

4. Book flights and accommodation separately. If you book them together then the package can often cost more than your budget will allow, but looking for budget honeymoon travel is made a lot more viable if you book the two entities separately.

5. Look to Hawaii and Mexico for the best discounts. Hotels in these resorts will often offer specific packages for individuals looking for budget honeymoon travel. The websites will often display these discounts so you can get a good idea of how much it will cost before talking to the hotel itself.

6. Choose a weekend break for your actual honeymoon, which may cost less than $500 in total, and then ask the guests at your wedding for travel gift certificates. You can then go on to book the ultimate honeymoon a few months after the wedding but can still get away for a few days after the wedding. This is a budget honeymoon travel technique that a high number of newlyweds are tapping into at the moment because of the rising costs of weddings.

Planning Your Next Vacation

Author: Stanley Davis

Source: articledashboard.com

When getting ready for your next vacation, you can keep costs and hassles to a minimum with a little advanced planning and preparation. The following tips will help make your next trip a fun and relaxing experience from beginning to end.

Maximize frequent flyer miles

Travelers can get a big value lift by maximizing airlines' frequent flyer programs. Identify which airlines partner together, such as those in the SkyTeam alliance, which includes Continental Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Northwest Airlines, Aerom้xico, Air France, Alitalia, Czech Airlines, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and Korean Air. Members of alliances have agreements in place that allow passengers to earn and redeem miles on flights with any of the carriers in the alliance. That means travelers flying with Continental, for example, can designate that the miles earned on the flight go into their Delta SkyMiles account.

To further your travel perks, book hotel and car rental accommodations with companies that have partnerships with the airline on which you earn your frequent flyer miles.

Research destinations and fares in advance

Travelers can save on travel costs by researching airfares and destinations early. This will give plenty of time to book accommodations and organize documentation without last-minute charges. If you are traveling to another country, it is important to know what paperwork and identification you will need before you depart. Be sure your passport is up-to-date and research visa and health information pertaining to specific destinations. If you are visiting several foreign destinations, look into special fare packages offered by alliances.

Pack smart

Travel light. Bring pieces that are easy to layer for comfortable transitions from daytime to evening and from outdoors to indoors.

Dress for security

When traveling through the airport, dress with security in mind. Wear slip-on shoes with little or no metal in them and minimal jewelry. Keep your boarding pass and identification easily accessible.

Prepare for the journey

Bring along reading materials and other entertainment, such as crossword puzzles. Also be sure to pack snacks and water to keep hydrated throughout your travels. While at the airport, take advantage of airport lounges, such as Northwest's WorldClubs, to relax in before your trip. Passengers without the ticket class or frequent flyer status to access lounges can often purchase a one-day lounge pass.

When you're packing for your next vacation, don't forget to pack in those frequent flyer miles.
